Family Travel
What better way to learn about the world than to travel through it? Enrich your family travel with our tips and resources.

Even in the shakiest economic times, savvy families can always find ways to shave pennies, dollars, and even hundreds of dollars off their travel spending. Here are 20 tried-and-true strategies to help you get more bang from your vacation buck:

1. Always do the math
Think you’re a savvy traveler? Well, here’s a question for you. Which is the best hotel deal: One that delivers (A) 50 percent off your second night, (B) your fourth night free, or © 30 percent off your nightly rate? Go ahead and get a pen and paper. Or a calculator. Or a fifth grader. We’ll wait.

This dismal economy has offered a silver lining for travelers: Super hotel deals, and lots of ’em. But those deals are dreamed up by hotel marketing teams who crunch numbers and write catchy headlines for a living. And that’s exactly why you need to do the math before reaching for your credit card. Sometimes you won’t save quite as much as you’d think.
2. Stay where kids eat free
Nothing shaves your family’s vacation costs like a free meal—or even better, make it three squares a day. Mindful of the high cost of traveling with children, an increasing number of hotels and resorts woo parents with “kids eat free” promotions. Family-friendly pricing is nothing new at Holiday Inn, which pioneered the “kids eat free” concept in 1993. Fifteen years later, kids 12 and under still eat free at nearly 900 Holiday Inn properties throughout the Americas. Kids also eat free when you book Marriott’s “Escape Family Time” package at select destinations. Tip: This kind of “soft” deal is often promoted in a low-key way. Be sure to check out the hotel’s special offers Web page, and ask about family deals when you reserve your room.

- Good Nightlife (ie Clubs, alcohol and of course girlssss.)

- Cheap (were students so moneys always a problem !) so somewhere where drinks/food etc is relatively cheap

- Good range of activities/attractions, so something that we can be doing most days.

we were thinking Rio de Janeiro, so is this the best place for us in SA, or could someone recommend a better place ?

I guess this is not really feedback, but it is a question directed to all those who own and work for road junky.

So, you all travel ,, here there and everywhere,,, and you write articles for a travel website (which in turn makes your income).

So what I'm wondering is do you write off all your travels on taxes as business expenses? If so, do you write everything from planes to food to beer,, or just specific things.

I can see how a hired author for Newsweek can write off everything it costs them when sent to Rio to cover topic "X". Their boss has sent them on a work related destination for a specific purpose. That will pass any IRS guy.

But my impression of Road Junky is that the owners/writers simply travel because they want to and the byproduct is articles (which then produce income via the website traffic). Is this seen differently by the IRS? Can you claim that any travel is for the purpose of "finding" material which in turn is your business and livelihood?

I'm really interested to know how far the writeoffs can go with a business model like this. I recently started a side business (travel guide) which is travel related. Some things are obvious, but other I don't know.
- can any trip be considered "research" for future customer excursions?
- can traveling to "X" and taking language lessons be considered "education" to improve future services?

These are the questions that haunt me around tax time. Would love to know how Road Junky deals with it.

thanks,

When Is The Best Time To Travel Vietnam ?

Vietnam has a tropical monsoon climate, dominated by the south or southwesterly monsoon from May to September and the northeast monsoon from October to April. The southern summer monsoon brings rain to the two deltas and west-facing slopes, while the cold winter monsoon picks up moisture over the Gulf of Tonkin and dumps it along the central coast and the eastern edge of the central highlands. Within this basic pattern there are marked differences according to altitude and latitude; temperatures in the south remain equable all year round, while the north experiences distinct seasonal variations.

In southern Vietnam the dry season lasts from December to late April or May, and the rains from May through to November. Since most rain falls in brief afternoon downpours, this need not be off-putting, though flooding at this time of year can cause problems in the Mekong Delta. Daytime temperatures in the region rarely drop below 20°C, occasionally hitting 40°C during the hottest months (March, April and May). The climate of the central highlands generally follows the same pattern, though temperatures are cooler, especially at night. Again, the monsoon rains of May to October can make transport more complicated, sometimes washing out roads and cutting off remoter villages.

Along the central coast the rainfall pattern reverses under the influence of the northeast monsoon. Around Nha Trang the wet season starts with a flourish in November and continues to December. Further north, around Hué and Da Nang, the rains last a bit longer, from September to February, though even the dry season (March to August) brings a fair quantity of intermittent rain. If possible it pays to visit these two cities in the spring (February to May), just before the rains break in September or as they begin to fizzle out in November. Temperatures reach their maximum (often in the upper 30s) from June to August, when it’s pleasant to escape into the hills. The northern stretches of this coastal region experience a more extreme climate, with a shorter rainy season (peaking in September and October) and a hot dry summer. The coast of central Vietnam is the zone most likely to be hit by typhoons, bringing torrential rain and hurricane-force winds. Though notoriously difficult to predict, in general the typhoon season lasts from August to November.

Northern Vietnam is generally warm and sunny from October to December, after which cold winter weather sets in, accompanied by fine persistent mists which can last for several days. Temperatures begin to rise again in March, building to summer maximums that occasionally reach 40°C between May and August, though average temperatures in Hanoi hover around a more reasonable 30°C. However, summer is also the rainy season, when heavy downpours render the low-lying delta area almost unbearably hot and sticky, and flooding is a regular hazard. The northern mountains share the same basic regime, though temperatures are considerably cooler and higher regions see ground frosts, or even a rare snowfall, during the winter (December to February).

With such a complicated weather picture, there’s no one particular season to recommend as the best time for visiting Vietnam. Overall, autumn (September to December) and spring (March and April) are probably the most favourable seasons if you’re covering the whole country.
For those who would like to experience the whole Vietnam, from the north to the south or vice versa, take Vietnam package tours
which will show you Vietnam in close up. After the long trip, may be you take some relaxation at Vietnam beach vacation.
