Hey there

i am travelling in Peru for some time. i love the country and think it has a lot offer. for the last 2/3 weeks i ve been travelling on a great route from Trujillo to Iquitos.

1) From Trujillo you can take a bus (company HORNA) right into the highlands to a village called Huamachuco (5 hours). Its a nice little place to spend the night and break the journey.

2) Then from Huamachuco countinue the journey to the small town of Cajabamba (3 hours).

3) From cajabamba there is a lot transportation to the city of Cajamarca. Its a very pleasent place and you can spend some quality time relaxing there.

4) From Cajamarca take a bus onwards to a village called Celendin (3 hours). a good place to spend the night and walk around.

5) From Celendin there is a daily morning bus with Movil Tours direct to Chachapoyas (8/9 hours). this route is quite arduous but very scenic. especially as the journey takes up the whole day.

6) In Chachapoyas you can of course visit the ruins of Kuelap and there are some other cool things to visit around the place too.

7) Then from Chachapoyas colectivo it all the way to Tarapoto. start in the morning as the journey can take all day.

8) spend the night in Tara and then from there you can take colectivos to Yurimaguas.

9) and from Yuri there are daily boats from the Puerto Boca port that go to Iquitos. the boat trip takes two full days and the boats are not soo bad but take enough bottled water and some food like bread and tinned tuna. you can rent hammocks on the boat.

take care
My plan is to take a flight from Helsinki to Barcelona and then hitch aroud the country just writing and going whit the flow. First problem is that I have only about 400€ cash and I want to stay on the road at least a year and see more than just a couple of countries.

Main reason for doing something like this is the freedom. Finland is almost fasistic country to live, full of prejudgmenting and rasistic people (forgive me my generalization).

I want to find: myself, lifetime friends, place where I belong... ...you know what I mean.

Every tip is worth of gold and I'm very pleased if more experienced travellers can share piece of their knowledge (Cheap food, cash to hand works, safe places to sleep etc...) <-- regarding mainly the Spain

So im basically leaving round may towards mexico, i was wondering if you guys would have any suggestions on what to bring since im such a noob at this traveling thing. By the way here is my plan...

1: Somehow make my way towards the border, "i'm thinking of probably getting on a bus to tijuana and then going on from their"
2: Head to Mexico city, current goal is to visit my grandfather's grave who past away a while ago, with me not their to say goodbye -_-.
3: Ive got some folks in mexico, so i was thinking of probably staying with them for a while then hitchhiking my way around mexico in order to thoroughly see the country ive only managed to get glimpses of from the backseat of a car with my parents.
4: Is it possible to somehow hitchhike your way onto a boat? If not then possibly work for a while until i can manage to cross into another continent, first i'd have to decide where to go though and first id have to see if i survive in mexico by myself xd...

Hello all,

Well it's been a while since I've been here, good to see RJ is strong as ever though.

This year I hitched a little bit for the first time, but now I want to set my sights on something much more epic. I'll be working until March, then my contract at my job will end and I'll fly to Amsterdam. From there, I want to hitch to the far east.

I know this is going to be impossibly difficult, and that there are so many challenges waiting out there for me, but what I'd like to ask today is the best route to take? If I'm wanting to hitch, looks to me like the choice is either through Russia to China, or going via Iran, Pakistan/Afghanistan, India (I'd love to see India). But, because I'm British I'm wondering if it's safe to be in a place like Iran, Afghanistan (especially Afghanistan) or Pakistan right now. I know the Iranian's are very friendly people, but would anyone advise against going that route on account of current politics?

Also open to a boat journey here and there if anyone is familiar.

Thanks for any input

Ok - i have decided as i am in India anyway to head to Goa for new years...
(I'm pretty sure it will beat the Chennai scene I'm currently stuck in...)
I know Goa isn't apparently as good as it used to be but I still want to see it...

The problem is tho that I have no idea of which beach to go to stay at? I really want to party and drink till dawn but not with some drunk Mafiosa... somewhere i get to meet some other travelers and some old freaks etc.

I don't want all the touristy crap either and i know new years is more expensive than any other time but is there anywhere that is pretty cheap and possibly like something from the golden days...

I have read the RJ guide to Goa but i need a bit more New Years specific info...
cheers for your help!

I know Goa isn't apparently as good as it used to be but I still want to see it...

The Drakensberg is the highest mountain range in Southern Africa, rising to 3,482 metres (11,420 ft) in height. In Zulu, it is referred to as uKhahlamba , and in Sesotho as Maluti . Its geological history lends it a distinctive character amongst the mountain ranges of the world. Geologically, the range resembles the Simien Mountains of Ethiopia.

The range is located in the eastern part of Southern Africa, running for some 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) from south-west to north-east. The mountains drain on the western slopes by the Orange and Vaal rivers, and on the east and south by a number of smaller rivers, the Tugela being the largest. Looming over the nearby coast of Natal the range covers the border between KwaZulu-Natal Province and the Drakensberg mountain kingdom of Lesotho.

The highest peak is Thabana Ntlenyana, at 3,482 metres (11,420 ft). Other notable peaks include Mafadi at 3,450 m, Makoaneng at 3,416 m, Njesuthi at 3,408 m, Champagne Castle at 3,377 m, Giant's Castle at 3,315 m, and Ben Macdhui at 3,001 m, all of these are in the area bordering on Lesotho. Another popular area for hikers is Cathedral Peak. North of Lesotho the range becomes lower and less rugged until entering Mpumalanga where the quartzite mountains of the Transvaal Drakensberg are loftier and more broken and form the eastern rim of the Transvaal Basin, the Blyde River Canyon lying within this stretch. The geology of this section is the same as and continuous with that of the Magaliesberg.

The mountains are capped by a layer of basalt approximately 1,400 m thick, with sandstone lower down, resulting in a combination of steep-sided blocks and pinnacles.
