RE: New Zealand wilderness
I've heard hitchhiking around is really easy and that way you get all the local tips on where to go as well as a good deal of hospitality.

New Zealand Destinations might be a good starting point.

Let us know how it goes.

Freedom camping law baby!

This is the common name for a law in NZ that permits 'freedom camping' on any public land providing there are no signposted restrictions... Take it easy and good luck. Just remember to be tidy! There are some shithead dirty tourists that may get this law changed in time...

Really? That's awesome (wondering how I never knew that)

Cooks beach is really nice, most of the tourists just head to hot water beach - ridiculously over rated - and its close so you and do that buzz while your in the area. Depends what your into, there are some amazing natural things to see that most of us kiwis never really notice.

RE: New Zealand wilderness
Hello,
It really depends on where you are camping.

See the NZ Department of Conservation (DOC) 'Places to stay'
doc.govt.nz/templates/default…
For National parks there are huts/cabins you can book in advance for a fee. You can also pitch a tent in certain areas. If you are really out the wilderness and it's not a National park you will be fine.
