RE: Good novels
The Girl Who Played Go by Shan Sa. Set in Manchuria during the Japanese invasion. Very sharp.
A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary For Lovers by Xialou Guo. I found the protagonist very charming. "Why do I have to learn English? I am no caring whether I am speaking English or not" Just finished A Fortune-Teller and enjoyed it greatly. Terzani had some interesting insights and perspectives. |

RE: Good novels
Hitchhiking Hokkaido Blues by Will Ferguson (I think). An English teacher travels the length of Japan meeting plenty of characters en route.
The Blue-Eyed Salaryman gives you some idea what it's like to work in corporate Japan. You have to laugh otherwise you'd cry. |
