RE: 10 worst cities
You got it Venus. The benefits are all in the experiences. Like these:
1) Getting woken up in the middle of the night by neighborhood youths throwing rocks at your tent because you decided to camp out in a vacant lot rather than shell out for a hostel 2) Staying downtown in some dangerous bustling Central American shithole, like Managua, you are greeted in the morning by crackheads crawling out of walls. But hey for $3/night lodging what do you expect? 3) After hours standing by the side of the road trying to hitch a ride, it's finally gotten too dark. You grope your way through some nearby vegetation, find a safe spot to pitch a tent, and wake up to some farmhand yelling at you for being on his land. 4) Your new friend in Quito decides he likes your stuff more than he likes you, and pulls a gun out in your face to get it. 5) Your constant companions: diarrhea, fleas/ticks/mosquitoes, and dogs frothing at the mouth oh man, this list can go on and on... but hell every minute is worth it. |

RE: 10 worst cities
I would also like to nominate Colon, Panama as the shittiest place Ive ever been. The cops, taxi drivers, and residents warned me and my 6ft8 football player boyfriend to turn back everywhere we went. (we were just walking around, having gotten off the Panama canal train, which was supercool). We finally went into a grocery store to try to decide if we should chance it getting into a sleasy looking cab, or to try to walk to the bus station 2 blocks away. We were told every 3 steps to turn around or we were gonna get mugged/murdered.
Having been to places like the getto in Mexico city and lost in Bangkok at 3am, I feel that Ive seen a bit of sleaze and danger. Colon sucks. In every way. |

RE: 10 worst cities
I´m giong to have to refute my statement about São Paulo being cool. I just stayed in São Paulo for 2 and a half weeks, and it sucks..... Bad. I was there for two days last year and had a blast, but staying in Saõ Paulo sucks ass. Not having a car is a huge pain in the ass there, and even if you do have a car, driving is a huge pain in the ass. You can go by subway, but the damn city is so big, good luck trying to find where you´re trying to go, especially if you don´t speak Portuguese. It´s also super grimmy, dangerous (though, if you are in a nice part of town you shouldn´t have to worry unless you have valuable things visible but always be aware anyways, especially at night), and way too crouded. The only thing São Paulo has to offer is good food, which for the quality, is probably more expesive than the US. If you live in Brazil it is a practical place to make money. Not sure if this is correct, but my friend who lives there told me 60% of the countries money is in São Paulo. He also said, `no one deserves to be exposed to São Paulo.` Never waist your time in São Paulo if you are going to Brazil, there are way too many other good places to go.

RE: 10 worst cities
Maybe you should add some border towns to the list. I'll nominate Poipet, Cambodia. Full of human detritus begging, hustling, scamming, stealing gambling, whoring.... I first passed through in the rainy season before the main road was paved. Not a pretty sight.

RE: 10 worst cities
The sad thing is that all of these places are better than Columbus, Ohio.
