I've read about India catching up with the global economy, a growth rate to catch up with china's etc and i just don't buy it.
I'm back here after 7 years away and yep, there's loads of young guys and gals walknig around with cell phones, spending money in cafes and discos. But this is Pune, one of the cities where call centres from the west have been set up paying like $400 a month which is big money here.
None of the BPO money (business processing outsourcing, i think) reaches the poor in India. It's just luxury money for those who speak good enough english to handle your insurance claims.
It's still a nightmare trying to get a phone line or internet in your apartment here that actually works. The servers like to take long breaks on sundays. The plumbers bribe the government not to install new pipes so that they can carry on screwing the tenants.
It's like a writer said recently, the government of india declared they want to bring India into the 21st century - as if they could skip the 20th century altogether.
Well, the poor in India should pray that the trickle down effect does exist and that it hits them before too long.
Its a huge country. And I am a believer the Indians will get there only because I was born in a country that went from being as poor as parts of Africa in the 1960s to having the same standard of living as Western Europe in the 1990s. My parents grew up with a lot of poverty, I saw only a little of that, and my teenage sister only ever remembers a life filled with foreign vacations, piano lessons, and live-in nannies. Amazing the difference that a couple decades can make.
the anecdote about plumbers brings back memories about going to the post office in Calcutta, and PAYING extra to get the stamps franked in front of my eyes (so that they dont steam the stamps off).
India has more scams than I will ever learn. Someone should remake Jarmusch's Down By Law, only this time set it in an Indian backwater like Bihar.
Don't worry, there are countries in Europe that are not doing any better. Yes, eastern Europe.
About a year ago I read a newspaper article about a small town in India that endured daily powercuts of upto 18 hours in order to ensure the cities could keep the lights on.
India's infrastructure is struggling to keep up with its economy.

Man , listen it is! But it is almost invisible. As a child I grew up in intense proverty. I have completed my com. sc. engg. degree and from 3rd year of my college life I am earning a few thousands of dollars through freelancing in Internet.I am a webmasters and free lance web designer/programmer with lots of project offers from around the world and I am not complaining. Now , I am richer with few millions Indian ruppes and writing from my Flat in Vasant Vihar ,New Delhi!
You are right the BPO guys are clueless about their future , police and politician stinks.People are always trying to get richer with backdoor ways but there are some people who strictly follow Gandhism till now.
I have read all articles about India , nothing to say against it.But I must say that I am going to be the next roadjunky . You wont believe I have read this website for all day long today - i am transformed. Thank you very much - I am felling excited about my world tour.
Hey DigitalBayer, welcome to the forums and yeah, i can see that freelancing brings some new cash to Indians with enough education to use a computer.
Let's hope the money reaches the masses. Personally, i don't see how the country will have enough water to drink in 30 years time...
... maybe, ... maybe l'm crazy ... but
... l think that nowhere in the world there are people getting reacher exept the few who have the privillege of decent, true education ( not the kind that produce "skilled workers" ) and the blessing of the willing to travel around the globe to get a "more complete", ... if possible, lmage of it ... and ... us
Rich or not , cant say abt it, what we had learned was india is a developing country and yes in these many years it has really showed progress in various fields like technology, standard of education, money value etc. but seeing the conditions right now, cant comment abt its future. it is so busy handling terrorist attacks and saving its people from evil eyes.
when will they have time to progress???
