Where are the best places to get away? And I mean away- from other backpackers, hitchers, tourists, locals... people in general? A place to disappear?
Nature.

It's tough to survive in a desert but anyone can go Into the Wild if they take a fishing line, a sleeping bag, some bags of rice, nuts and dried fruit.

I had a friend who spent 2 years walking in national parks in the US, he spent $2000 a year camping, walking, driving from park to park.

Renting a house somewhere high in mountains somewhere isn't a bad bet, either.
Not exactly what I had in mind...

I was trying to lead the topic into more like Patagonia, the Andes, Tibet & Nepal, the Himalayas(however you spell it), technically "inhospitable" places that do not see many tourists or have many villages or towns.

I have debated on the Amazon- I have had my malaria, yellow fever, et al vaccinations when working offshore(necessary evil) and except for little guys trying to shove a poison dart up my ass it sounds downright inviting. Majority of it unexplored...yadda yadda.

Anybody here been WAY off the beaten track in those places? And I do not mean tours.
The Kamchatka Peninsular came to mind. Isolated and dangerous, probably has more bears (and volcanos?) than Russians and used to be a closed military area. Lots of it is still untrodden as most of it is only accessible by helicopter - though who knows if there are other means? You're probably aware that some Russians are up for anything, so might help outside the tours - though I don't know anything for definite.

I learnt about it during some research for a drive along the Amur Highway (worlds longest road in a single country) St Petersburg - Vladivostok, with a possible detour south to Mongolia (another good place to get lost?). Had some mad ideas of somehow getting up there via 'Road of Bones' and boat, then going for a walk.

You can live on a beach pretty much anywhere as fresh water floats on top of salt and there's food to be had on the shore and in the sea. I've heard of people eking out a life on beaches in north australia without seeing anyone for months.

Worth while learning your survival shit before you go though.
The survival stuff is not the problem, Tom. I have always been a "nut" in that regard. Picture this: a grandfather who truly believes that a man is not a man unless he can provide for himself by himself in the wilderness for weeks or months at a time- living through the Great Depression will do that I guess. He would pack a cane fishing pole, some hooks, a cup, a knife, blanket, a 22 with six bullets, and a small box of matches- and whatever else I had in my pockets at the time- and would leave me in the wilds for a week. I had to learn what rocks would make sparks for fire, how to build a campfire that would take to just sparks- or a match- to stay lit, how to fish, cook and clean game, etc. needless to say boyscouts bored the hell of me.

The island bit sounds great. What are the rules and regulations for that though? I mean sqautters rights and all that? Overstaying visas...

The problem I am having now to just take off and do that is financial. I do not want to take off till I get my debt paid off. The Harley for one. But, it seems the more I pay on my debt the deeper in a hole I find myself. There is a 7 year statute of limitations here in the US- if memory serves. But that means staying off the grid for 7 years.
You'd be a fool to walk off into the amazon without a local guide taking you out one on one for at least a month. There are just so many things that can hurt (kill) you and it's so easy to get lost. There are fewer and fewer places to get away these days, I suppose. Northern Burma maybe, if you could get there. The advantage of the high jungle is that there are fewer bugs and it's easier to figure out where the fuck you are. You will get eaten alive by bugs, ants, whatever in the amazon. Imagine entering the world's largest maze filled with little traps that can slowly (or rather quickly) kill you. The northern Philippines (particularly the North east of Luzon island is a rather large wilderness of forests, mountains and beaches. No road access, no large settlements.
