Could anyone whose travelled to pakistan or iran lately give me some insight on if it is safe to backpacking in pakistan or iran? I've heard that iran is safe and that pakistan is fairly safe but i'd just like to make sure.

Reports find Iran totally safe. Can't say the same for all of Pakistan, not enough info. maybe some other road junkies have something to offer?
pakistan can be wild and woolly.
But totally rewarding. Peshawar was a blast and pakistanis see so few westerners that you're quite the celebrity.
Lahore and the Sind can be very dodgy but head over to the Patan areas where everyone carries guns and you should be quite safe.
Male rape isn't all that rare so keep your eyes open and grow a beard (assuming you're a guy, i'm not sure i could recommend a woman to travel alone in Patan areas..)
But mostly the Patans are super-hospitable even though you'll never stay in the family house for fear of shaming the women. Islam is extreme there.
Iran is safe as houses.
